A Poem For Kylee

Since we are fortunate to have our Korean exchange student, Chae-Eun, live with us for the next year I have decided to post a Korean word for the day. I will spell the word out as it sounds and after the day is over will add it to a list of words that have been on this site.  I hope you learn as much from Chae-Eun as I hope to. Thanks Chae-Eun!!!

WORD OF THE DAY-
Friday, December 5,2003

I am hot: Dup-Da. Dup rhymes with soup.

If anyone knows a better way to explain how to say this word, please email me and we will put your explanation up on the site. Email:clddbd007@yahoo.com

Korean Phrases
I am cold: Chup-Da. Chup rhymes with soup.
Don't cry: wool-ji-ma-ra
What I seem to be saying a lot of these days-
Don't do that: ha-jee-ma. Emphasis on jee.
Happy Birthday:Sang-il means birthday. Chook-ha-hom-ni-da means congratulations. So to say Happy Birthday you say. Sang-il  Chook-ha-hom-ni-da.
Let's go: Ga-ja. Just as it sounds.
Our House: woo-lee-jip. Just as it sounds.

AN ALPHABETICAL LIST OF PREVIOUS WORDS
Airplane: be-hang-gi. The gi rhymes with see. Hang is just the way it sounds.
Apple: sa-gwa. Just as it sounds.
Baby: ah-gee. Ah as is what the doctor says to you when she says "Open your mouth and say AHH" Gee rhymes with bee.
Bath: Mok-yok. This is an easy one-it is pronounced just the way it is written.
Bear: gom. Rhymes with home.
Bed: Chim-dae. Chim rhymes with Kim and dae sounds like day except shorter not as drawn out.
Breakfast: ah-chim-bab. Just the way it sounds.
Car: Cha. As in the dance the Bear In The Big Blue House does, the cha-cha-cha.
Coat: Coat. Now isn't this easy!
Come here (to a young child) E-lee-wa.
Cow: So. Just as it sounds.
Dog: Gae. Sounds like how you say the word get without saying the T.
Door: Moon. Just like what is up in the sky.
Duck: as in the quacking kind. O-lee. Just as it sounds.
Ears: Gui. Pronounced g-wee. Rhymes with see.
Eyes: Noon. As in afternoon or high noon or noontime.
Fork: Fork. This is just too easy!
Friend: chin-goo. Just like it sounds.
Grape: po-do. Do sounds like dough.
Head: Mu-Lee. Mu is pronounced maw. Rhymes with saw. Lee is just as we know it-Lee.
Horse + also the word Speak: Mal. Just the way it sounds.
House: Jip. Rhymes with sip and rip.
Knees: Moo-leup. Moo sounds like the sound a cow makes. Leup, now that is the hard one. Even though there is no R in the Korean language, leup sounds similar to the word rip, without a strong R sound. Leup is very difficult but for knees say: moo-rip.
Love You: sa-rang-han-da. Sa rhymes with Ha. Rang really sounds like it rhymes with the word bong, han rhymes with con, da is well...da.
Lunch: Jum-shim. Jum rhynes with drum. Shim is as it sounds.
Mouth: Ip. Rhymes with lip or like sounds like lip minus the l.
My: ne. Rhymes with ge as in the ge in the word get.
Nose: Ko. Rhymes with sew, low and go.
Pants: Ba-Gee. Gee is pronounced as in Gee Whiz!
Pen: Pen. Okay, I am cheating here but let's face it, we all want to think we are pronouncing our Korean words correctly and with like this we are!
Pencil: Youn-pil. Sounds like yawn + peel without such a strong ee sound on the peel.
Photograph: Sa-Jin. Just the way it sounds.
Pickle: o-e. Just sound out the vowels and you've got it!
Pillow: Be-Gae. Be sounds like the BE in bed and gae sounds like the ge in gecko.

Shoulders:Au-gee. Pronounced more like AW (as in awful) and GE (with an emphasis on the g. Also GE sounds like the ge in the word gecko.)
Spoon: sue-car-ra
Toes:bahl. It's kind of a soft B, short L sound. To me it almost sounds like Bobby McFarrin singing Don't Worry Be Happy with the Caribbean influence so that Bahl sounds similar to pal with a B and that Caribbean dialect.
Tree: Na-moo. An easy one it's just the way it sounds!
Watch: As in what you wear on your wrist. Si-gae. Si sounds sort of like she without the long eee sound at the end. Gae- as in the ge from the word gecko.
